Any book on parenting is somewhat of a rarity, so that publication of this particular volume is to be applauded, coming as it does at a time when the problems of parenting are increasing with every day that passes. God’s word has much to say on the subject, and throughout this book the author bases his recommendations on divine teaching, rather than on tentative, often untested, suggestions of psychologists. This book focuses the mind of a parent on those crucial tasks that follow upon the precious gift of a child by God. Those who receive such a gift must accept the stewardship that goes with it. No task is more demanding, for the extended path of growth and development granted to mankind entails a perpetuation over many years of those responsibilities imposed upon the guardians of the young. Lim Teang Leong approaches the subject in such a positive and constructive way, challenging parents in the first place to acknowledge before God their own spiritual condition, and then aspire to becoming more and more Christlike in manner of living. The inevitable sequel to such a programme of reappraisal and change is to become more responsive to the prompting of the Holy Spirit of God in the endeavour to ‘train up a child in the way he should go’. Also stressed is the importance of the love of God being demonstrated through us in all the differing situations that are likely to occur over those long years of parenthood.
I warmly recommend this helpful, thought-provoking book to parents and to others who would seek to counsel parents – it represents a veritable treasure-chest of godly wisdom and sound advice based on good practice.
