THE ROCK THAT IS HIGHER THAN I

This verse is taken from:
Psalm 61. 1-8

When overwhelmed, it is good to look to ‘the rock that is higher than I’. We can find consolation in the fact that there is such a Rock for the believer. Israel found, and we can too, that our Rock is worthy of trust.

The Rock is stable. It cannot be moved. Strength and dependability is in view here. When overwhelmed by an accumulation of pressing duties we need a rock to rest on. When unexpected sorrow breaks in on our life we need a rock. When that in which we trusted has failed us, then we need this prayer, ‘lead me to the rock that is higher than I’.

Israel found this rock to be her supply. In all of Israel’s experiences ‘they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer’, Ps. 78. 35. It was God who delivered Israel in times of near starvation, loss or defeat. It was God who came to Israel in her unfaithfulness to restore her again. It was this Rock that provided refreshment in the wilderness. So, too, our Lord Jesus Christ is the source of satisfying supply in life. Walk close to Him and know fellowship with Him. The ‘broken cisterns’ of life will not satisfy.

The Rock is superior. It is the ‘rock that is higher than I’. We need someone greater than ourselves in life. Within there is nothing to help. Our intellects, our desire, our drive, our determination, all have their place. But they alone will not equip us in the overwhelming times of life. We need the Rock that is greater than all. He is never overwhelmed. He is greater than our greatest need.

The Rock is sympathetic. The picture of the Rock should not lead us to think of an inanimate object. He is the living Rock. It is this Christ, the Son of the living God, upon which His church is being built, Matt. 16.18. He cares about you.

Do you know the Rock? This Rock saves, and He will save you if you will have Him. The New Testament tells us, ‘that Rock was Christ’, 1 Cor. 10. 4. He was a satisfying spiritual drink to Israel and He is the only one who can satisfy the spiritual hunger of men and women lost in sin. Go to the Lord today and ask Him to lead you to ‘the rock that is higher than I’.
