All Present Throughout Eternity - Chapter 13

  1. Love in Personal Life, vv. 1-6. Be Generous.
    • Sweetness of Christian fellowship, 1; John 13. 34, 35.
    • Sympathy of Christian love, 2. Hospitable to strangers.
    • Suffering of Christian servants, 3. Help in burden-bearing.
    • Sanctity of Christian marriage, 4. An honourable institution.
    • Purity of Christian relationship, 4. Moral laxity is punished by God.
    • Profit of Christian contentment, 5a. Avoid covetousness.
    • Pleasure of Christian help, 5b. “I will never leave thee”.
    • Power of Christian faith, 6. “I will not fear”.
    • We are exhorted to be lovers, 1; givers, 2; sympathizers, 3; saints, 4, 6.
  2. Loyalty in Social Life, vv. 7-14. Be Genuine.
    • Past Memories, 7. Death may vanquish former leaders, but duty calls to present leaders. Remember their manner of life.
    • The Immutability of the Saviour, 8. Yesterday - His prophetic ministry guiding. Today - His priestly ministry sustaining. For ever - His kingly ministry refreshing and rewarding.
    • Present Difficulties, 9. Stability comes only through knowledge of the truth. Holiness and stability of heart depend upon grace and not food.
    • Present Portion, 10. The altar may refer to that in the Jewish religion, Lev. 6. 30. By abiding there, one cannot participate in Christ’s sin offering, Heb. 13. 12-13. But we have a place of sacrifice, atonement and reconciliation, the cross of Calvary. Christ is both altar and sacrifice, 12; the satisfaction of the cross, 10. The sacrifice of the day of atonement, 12; sanctification by blood, 12. Separation from the religious world, 13a; association with a rejected man, 13b.
  3. Liberty in Spiritual Life, vv. 15-25. Be Gracious.
    • Life of Sacrifice, 15-16. Praise to God and good works among the saints. Words of praise and works of power are acceptable to God.
    • Life of Submission, 17. Our guides are to be respected, since they have responsibilities to God and His people.
    • Life of Supplication, 18-19. Fellowship in prayer, and sincerity in heart and life.
    • Life of Strength, 20-21. What God is - the God of peace. What God has done - raised the Lord. What God desires -to adjust or set right, 21. What God requires - to do His will. What God will do - working in you. How God works - through Jesus Christ. What God deserves - all the glory.
    • Salutations, 22-25, Pressing appeal, 22. Personal liberty, 23. Purposed visit, 23b. Precious fellowship, 24. Provided grace, 25.

Suggestions for Study.

What are the marks of a Christian? and of leaders? What is the camp today? Muse long on the doxology, 20-21, which terminates the teaching of the Epistle.

Study the following key words in this Epistle, “excellent”, “more”, “sanctification”, “partakers”, “surety”, “mediator”. Trace the titles of the Lord Jesus and the privileges of the saints.
