Points of Comparison and Contrast Between 1 Thessalonians 4.13-18 and 1 Thessalonians 5.1-11

1 Thessalonians 4. 13-18

1.Believers addressed as brethren, v. 13.

2.The apostle would not have them, not to know something, v. 13.

3.He therefore writes concerning the coming of the Lord, v. 15.

4.He speaks of two classes of believers:

i. Those alive and remaining, vv. 15-17

ii. Those asleep, vv. 13, 14, 15, 16.

5.And he mentions the former in contrast to the others. i.e. Unbelievers who sorrow without hope, v. 13.

6.The exhortation is, that ye sorrow not, v. 13.

7.The death and resurrection of Jesus is the ground of hope, v. 14.

8.Both classes of believers will be caught up together, v. 17.

9.Comfort is to be derived from this, v. 18.

10. The coming of the Lord will not find any believer unprepared, w. 15, 16.

Give thanks for the meeting in the air, v. 17.

1 Thessalonians 5. 1-11

1.Believers addressed as brethren, vv. 1, 4.

2.The apostle is aware that there is something they know accurately, v. 2.

3.He alludes to the day of the Lord, v. 2.

4.He speaks of two classes of believers:

i. Those who are awake, v. 10.

ii. Those who might drop off to sleep, v. 10.

5.And he mentions the latter in contrast to the others. i.e. Unbelievers who sleep in the night, v. 6.

6.The exhortation is, let us not sleep, but let us watch, v. 6.

7.The Lord Jesus Christ is the Guarantor of salvation, v. 9.

8.Both classes of believers shall live together with him, v. 10.

9.Mutual comfort should result from this, v. 11.

10. The day of the Lord will take all unbelievers unawares, w. 3, 4.

Give thanks for missing the wrath on earth, v. 9.

The Spirit of Truth in the scriptures of truth very effectively associates future events with the verb “to come":
