Today’s Daily Thought –

2 Timothy 4

This is the last chapter of Paul’s last Epistle and records his last words to Timothy, and to us. Issues Paul felt were important for Timothy are that he should: preach the word; watch in all things; endure afflictions; do the work of an evangelist; make full proof of his ministry. Certainly, these were things Paul himself had fully pursued and accomplished and it is his burning desire that his beloved son in the faith should do likewise.

Having thus exhorted him, Paul now reflects on his own service and speaks of his readiness to depart. He views his impending death as an offering up to God of his life of sacrifice. His death will be like the pouring out of a drink offering over a sacrifice. HIEBERT declares, ‘His whole life has been presented to God as a living sacrifice; now his death, comparable to the pouring out of the wine as the last act of the sacrificial ceremony, will complete the sacrifice’. Not only is he ready to die but feels that it will be soon - ‘the time of my departure is at hand’. Death is a harsh word but there are some lovely ideas behind it. The Greek word used by Paul signifies the unloosing of a ship from its anchorage, or the unloosing of an ox from its harness. It suggests thoughts of freedom and rest. Paul had been attached to earth for longer than he cared for, and now he confidently looks forward to heaven and home. So, too, should we!

As to his life of service he had fought the fight, finished the course and been faithful in the ministry with which he had been entrusted by the Lord. He looks forward with confidence to the crown of righteousness which he will receive from his blessed Lord. What comfort for Timothy that his ‘father’ is so relaxed.

But even in his last days here in Rome he needs practical help. Not many are willing to give it now for one reason and another, but there are some on whom he can depend. Certainly, Timothy is one . . . and John Mark is another. Paul desperately wishes to have them both with him, along with Luke, to see out his last days. He needs the cloak, he would like the books, and he would really love to have the parchments from Troas. Can he have them before winter? With these and his friends, the cold will be tolerable, the end joyful, then . . . at home with the Lord!

2 Timothy 3
Timothy is warned of a great departure in ‘the last days’ and, while doubtless he saw many portents of this evil, surely the worst is yet to come; we should be on our guard. Verses 2 to 7 speak of the character and wickedness of these men as they are compared to the infamous Jannes and Jambres who so blatantly withstood Moses as he engaged in the struggle to lead the people of God in his day. How welcome to read the determination in verse 9, ‘But they shall proceed no further’! God will eventual…
