A good soldier of Jesus Christ

In this chapter Paul is writing to encourage Timothy in his very difficult ministry in Ephesus. He will need to cultivate many spiritual qualities and be strong, yet at the same time gentle and patient. Leaders of God’s people have many demands upon them and leading the flock is not at all an easy undertaking. Paul draws seven word-pictures to encourage leaders by showing what they are and how they should conduct themselves.

  1. A courageous son - Timothy is reminded that he is a spiritual son of the great apostle himself, and, of course, also a son of God. He should therefore be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. This is a sure foundation on which to build.
  2. A good soldier - Timothy was not asked if he had an interest in soldiering but told that he had been chosen to be a soldier. It is a high privilege to be chosen by the Lord. As such he will not be confined to barracks but will be in the field at the forefront of the battle. Hardness of circumstances will feature regularly and that is something, if not to be enjoyed, then to be endured as a good soldier, without complaint. Loyalty and obedience would also be necessary and, in the end, victory, while assured, is not without pain, disappointments, and tears.
  3. A trained athlete - He would have to strive and to keep within the rules of engagement, lest, having run well and encouraged others, he himself should be disqualified.
  4. A patient husbandman - results will not be achieved overnight, nor in one’s own strength. The farmer is patient and waits for God to give the increase in connection with his labour.
  5. A skilled workman - in handling the word of God he must rightly divide it so as not to be guilty of deceit.
  6. A sanctified vessel - ever ready for the Master to use, and prepared unto every good work as opportunities arise.
  7. A gentle servant - showing diligence and patience even with those who oppose themselves, trusting that God will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.

These are encouragements, but there are also warnings to be heeded. Satan and the flesh are ever active, both for the servant and those whom he has the privilege to serve. Dangers abound.
