This verse is taken from:
Job 22. 1-30
Chapter 22 is the third attempt by Eliphaz to convince Job that he must surely be a sinner in the sight of God, and he unjustly accuses him of many things. He charges Job with a catalogue of wickedness including taking pledges for nought, stripping the poor to nakedness, refusing to give refreshment to the weary and bread to the hungry, sending widows away empty and even breaking the arms of orphans! How awful for Job. Now Eliphaz reminds him that God in heaven is all-seeing and He acts in judgement, as He did in the days of Noah. He suggests that Job should mark ‘the old way which wicked men have trodden’, contemplate their end, and learn that God inevitably judges sin.
Although these allegations against Job were totally unfounded, and wickedness in themselves, Eliphaz does come up with sound advice for both the sinner and the unjustly accused. In verse 22 he says, Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace’. The individual should seek to get to know God and in so doing will discover that good will often come his way. He will be built up, have the mighty God as Defender, silver and gold will be his portion, his prayers will be answered, depression will be lifted, light will shine on his path and he will enjoy face to face communion with God. What an extraordinary list of blessings for those who acquaint themselves with God!
The question arises, however, as to how one does become acquainted with the Almighty. Eliphaz has some good ideas. These include having an understanding of His character from historical events, vv. 15-16; receiving the word of God and laying it up in the heart, v. 22; returning to Him in humility and living righteously, v. 23; and spending time in prayer, v. 27. By such means a personal knowledge of God is built up over time and confidence in Him ensues, enabling one to live by faith.
These experiences will produce peace in the believer in spite of trying circumstances. Personal tragedies such as Job endured, bereavement, loss of possessions, ill health and many other human difficulties will produce not despair but peace and help us to see things from God’s standpoint. So, let us today embark on the path of getting to know Him better. It pays dividends!
