Every assembly should have godly couples like Aquila and Priscilla, for what a part they have to play, and what a difference their presence would make. Exiled from Rome, they had dutifully left to set up temporary home in Corinth where they were happy to provide accommodation for Paul and Silas. The first point of contact with Paul was their common trade – they were all tentmakers. But the overriding common denominator was, obviously, their mutual love for the Lord and His people. Truly, servants of God over the ages have appreciated such couples and their opened homes. Imagine their conversation whilst sewing with the needle, and sowing the word of God. How carefully God guides and provides for His servants in their labours for Him.
Their hospitality was enduring, for Paul and Silas spent 18 months in Corinth, first laying the foundation for the local church and then building it up. In all that time we read nothing of this couple, which only magnifies the humble part they played in providing a home for God’s servants, so releasing them to preach and teach the word. At the same time they too were being taught, imbibing the word of God; this is evident in the way they were able to deal with Apollos.
They appear to have become attached to Paul and Silas, so that when they moved on, our couple went with them as far as to Ephesus, where Paul was confidently able to leave them. Imagine the benefits they would have been able to provide in Ephesus, even to the point where the church met in their home, 1 Cor. 16. 19. Imagine the believers who found help, guidance and encouragement as these ministered before the Lord to the needs of all. No place there for gossip, scandal and whisperings for there the Lord was honoured and exalted.
Great man though Apollos was, he soon found that Aquila and Priscilla were discerning enough to realize deficiency in his teaching, possessing capability to put him on the right road. They both expounded to him the way of God more perfectly (accurately) so that he was able to go on to greater things for God. How he and so many others would have thanked God for Aquila and Priscilla.
