Praise the Lord we have a Deliverer! David delighted in this wonderful truth since he knew from personal experience how the Lord delivered him from horrifying enemies. David mentions this again and again, ‘so shall I be saved from mine enemies’, Ps. 18. 3; ‘He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me; for they were too strong for me’, Ps. 18. 17. It is no wonder that David rejoiced in the Lord as his deliverer.

But as great as David’s enemies were, in the end the worst they could have done would have been to inflict physical death. We too faced an enemy. He is far greater than the fiercest of earthly foes. His objective is destruction. But thank the Lord for our Deliverer. Paul writes, ‘Who [the Father] hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son’, Col. 1. 13. And consider, ‘Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage’, Heb. 2. 14, 15. This deliverance is strong and secure, never to be undone. The enemy is destroyed.

David was rejoicing in another thrilling aspect of the deliverer. Why would God be a deliverer? What moved Him to give His Son to die for me? Verse 19, ‘because He delighted in me’. We, who were enemies, are delivered by His mighty power from the greater enemy, because He loves us. There is no story like this. ‘But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us’, Rom. 5. 8.

David was moved to praise as he thought of his God of deliverance. ‘Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name’, Ps. 18. 49. His joyful praise was a witness to the unbelieving nations around him. We too should be a people who rejoice and praise our God in this ungodly world. We should be singing the songs of heaven. There is no God like our God.
