DIVINE PROMISE

In many ways death is a great watershed, and this is especially so with the death of a strong and powerful leader. Joshua’s death is more fully recorded in Judges chapter 2 verses 8 and 9, but is mentioned in our reading as a sort of general introduction to the book of Judges. The death of Joshua is significant, for while he was alive Israel was essentially victorious, but after his death Israel was in decline. Joshua’s leadership is highlighted in the book of Joshua and is an account of the successful invasion of the Promised Land. The events following his death are recorded in the book of Judges, and cover a period which has been called the dark ages in Israel’s history.

Those dark ages include Israel’s sin of idolatry, which was followed by God’s judgement upon the nation in the form of foreign oppressors invading the country. Israel then cried out to the Lord in repentance and prayed for deliverance. God heard their prayer, and deliverance was brought about by God raising up judges to inspire Israel to drive out the oppressors. The cycle repeats itself many times in the period covered by the book of Judges.

However, Israel did not start off with defeat or idolatry, for with the death of Joshua, they turned to the Lord in prayer, v. 1. They sought advice from God as to who would lead them into battle, as they now had no national leader upon whom they could depend.

The Lord answered their prayer in two ways. First, they were told that Judah was to lead them into battle. Second, they were given assurance of ultimate victory over the people of the land, v. 2. There then follows an account of Judah entering into battles and being victorious because ‘the Lord was with Judah’, v. 19. Though God had given the promise of victory - and it was only with His help and strength that it could be achieved, yet the battle had to be engaged, and the effort of campaign undertaken. Here are divine and human responsibilities working in harmony for the glory of God.

There is still need for firm decisive leadership in companies of God’s people, and such leadership must be of God’s provision, and rely upon God for His guidance and empowerment. Others should acknowledge this appointment by God and offer their full and active support.
