This verse is taken from:
Colossians 1. 15
Continuing to look at this sublime passage our hearts are drawn out in worship at the uniqueness and majesty of this One, the eternal Son of God, who has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son.
The phrase we look at today has been much abused by those who would detract from the deity of Christ, making Him out to be the first created being. But the particular Greek word used, and its usage in scripture, militates against that teaching.
The blessing and inheritance intended for the firstborn son in the patriarchal line is never given to the first son born! Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Ephraim were given the firstborn blessing and none of them were first born sons. They were sons chosen by God to receive that position and blessing. Israel is called God’s firstborn in a national sense receiving from God blessings over all the other nations of the world, Exod. 4. 22.
The Lord Jesus Christ, who is co-equal and co-eternal with God, is declared to be the heir of all things, Heb. 1. 2; all power is given to Him, Matt. 28.18; all judgement is given into His hands, John 5. 22, and all heaven declares Him to be worthy to receive all glory, honour and power, Rev. 5. 8-13.
The Lord Jesus is declared to be over all creation, not a part of creation, and in this position He is in absolute supremacy. He is worthy to receive the worship of all creation.
Paul is concerned that the Colossian believers are turning from Christ to the philosophies and traditions of men, the beggarly elements of the fleshly mind. All of these things fade into the mist of nothingness compared with the bright light of the glory of Christ.
Unfortunately the Colossian problem is with us today. The more we elevate men and their thinking, following after the traditions of men, confusing the holy and spiritual with the sensual and emotional, the less we think of Christ. Today, as well as in Paul’s day, we need a fresh revelation to our hearts of the God of glory and His supreme Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Wise men still seek Him and when they see Him they still worship Him!
