GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY, AND IN YOUR SPIRIT

This verse is taken from:

In the latter part of this chapter the apostle addresses the subject of licentiousness. This may have still been looked upon by some of the recent Corinthian converts as not so serious a sin, especially as the city of Corinth was infamous for this kind of behaviour. He presents five arguments as to why fornication and adultery are to be abhorred:

  1. The body is not for fornication but for service and the honour of the Lord, v. 13.
  2. The assurance of the resurrection of the body should act as a restraint, v. 14.
  3. The body of the believer is a member of Christ, v. 15.
  4. To indulge in illicit sex is to sin against one’s own body, v. 18.
  5. The believer’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, v. 19.

These arguments, both negative and positive, are presented to ensure the believer is left in no doubt as to the seriousness of the sin and the dishonour and damage caused if indulged in.

In verse 20, he brings the subject to a head - the believer is under an obligation to glorify God both with his body and spirit, ‘which are God’s’. The Lord made both and so is entitled to creatorial rights over them. Furthermore, He bought both, and with what a price - Christ’s own precious blood. Therefore, on both counts, they should be used in His service and should not be defiled or prostituted. We should recognize that we are sanctified - set apart for His use exclusively. We should seek to honour Him with our bodies and spirits, which are His. This must involve turning from every form of fornication; not only from the outward act, but also from the adultery of the heart of which our Lord speaks, Matt. 5. 28. Body and spirit are to be kept clean, that God may be honoured by both. God is dishonoured when either is defiled by so heinous a sin. The so-called Early Church Fathers had rightly learnt from Joseph’s experience when they wrote, ‘Other vices may be conquered in fight, this only by flight’. Let us ensure that we positively use our bodies and spirits in God’s service to glorify Him.
