This verse is taken from:
1 Corinthians 11. 2-6
The Holy Spirit, through Paul, will now address disorder in the matters of headship and subjection. Many would dismiss this whole passage as being cultural and not generally applicable today but we would refute this by referring to four timeless things in the passage, namely:
Headship : ‘the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God’, v. 3. What is referred to in this verse is the order of ‘headship’. The term headship does not convey superiority or inferiority, but authority and priority of function. It is plainly evident that whereas God is ‘the head of Christ’, there can be no question of inferiority! This is a timeless statement and therefore the rest of the verse must also be timeless to make sense.
Creation : ‘For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man’, vv. 8-9. The order of creation cannot be changed, it is a historical fact. This makes the truth imparted timeless and relevant to all ages and cultures.
The Angels : ‘For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels’, v. 10. The question could be asked, ‘Did the angels only look down upon the believers gathered at Corinth’? The answer must surely be that they have continued to observe what is being practiced in every local church right down to the churches functioning today. Why do they do this? Can they see Christ’s headship acknowledged in our assembly?
Nature : ‘Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?’ v. 14. Here, the Holy Spirit draws upon the order of ‘nature itself’. This is not something that was culturally produced, but applies universally.
These four timeless statements show that this passage applies today as much as it did when first written. It is a great privilege for believers, gathered to the name of the Lord, to express this fundamental truth in a simple way. The woman, who is ‘the glory of the man’, v. 7, is covered, in order that the glory and Headship of Christ may be displayed and pre-eminent.
