This verse is taken from:
Revelation 4. 1-5
The word ‘like’ encourages us to think that the original really has no earthly equal, neither seen nor experienced, but here is something that will give the idea of what it looked like! ‘Like’ is never the complete record or representation and, with God’s throne, nothing can ever compare with the real thing.
God is invisible, but He has made Himself known in character and ways, so that we are not totally without understanding as to what He is like. John is brought directly through an opened door in heaven into the presence of the throne room of the eternal God, the Creator and the Ruler of all things.
John’s senses allow him to perceive One who is, as to the substance of His being, ‘like a jasper and a sardine stone’, and the whole encircled by a rainbow of emerald. These gems will give us an insight into the One who sits upon the throne.
We are dependent upon others as we would meditate the value of these precious stones in terms of the Lord. For our purpose we will look just at the colours they radiate and leave it there.
Jasper is crystal clear with a purple hue and is there to convey ‘the perfections of light’. It says our God is utter holiness. Sardine stone is blood-red, symbolic of divine wrath but also of redemptive power through sacrifice. And, finally, the rainbow of emerald ever declares His complete faithfulness in regard to covenant and promise.
What a God we have! He is glorious in light and intrinsically holy. He is boundless in love, proved so fully in not sparing His own Son but giving Him up for us all. He is the originating life, giving life to all things and eternal life to those who come to Him through Jesus Christ, preserving and saving to the very last. So we declare:
‘Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes. Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise’.
