MEDIATOR

When it comes to bridging the gap between God and men what we need is a mediator. A mediator enters into relations both with God and with men, understanding and sympathising with each alike. He would intervene between us and God in such a way that he would make peace, restoring friendship, and forming a covenant relationship between us the terms of which we can fulfil and God can accept.

Where can anyone be found that can do this? Human history has not yet produced one. Who would be capable of such a position and carry it out without fail? Job, in his day, cried out for such, a ‘Daysman’ he called him, someone able to stand between him and God to be his ‘go between’. He didn’t get any applicants for the position and made it plain that he felt the request was an impossible one to find an answer to, Job 9. 32.

So the case is hopeless if we were to look to mankind to provide this mediator. Our resources are so pitiful. To speak to and for men we might have found a good man but to handle things before God would be beyond us forever.

The passage today will remind us that we have a God who is the Saviour God, and that He desires the salvation of all men. We can fully trust Him to provide all that will be needed in order to bring about the blessing He desires all to have the chance of receiving.

Only God can answer to God and only a perfect man will have any standing before Him. So the question arose and was asked, even perhaps before time began, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’, Isa. 6. 8. Even as God brought the first man into being and caused him to breathe earth’s air, He was already thinking of the second Man, the last Adam, whom He would later bring in to be the ‘one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus’.

God provided the Mediator! The Lord Jesus, in His death, came between God and us, making it possible for the restoration of the harmony that had been broken by sin. To do this He became man and forged a link with the human race. ‘Oh the love that drew salvation’s plan!’
