Your Basket Is Empty

A remarkable place in the ministry of the Lord Jesus is accorded to children. He, who passed His years of childhood in a simple Jewish home, displayed an unquestionable affection for children. Quite a number of His miracles were performed for the benefit of children and He often used them as positive illustrations in His parables and teachings. Such references confirm the depth of the interest in children of Jesus of Nazareth.
In the verses of the previous section the Lord Jesus had established the sanctity of marriage and the security of the family. It is fitting that children should be introduced in this section, for they are the ones who suffer most when family values are disregarded. The disciples regarded the request of the adults for these children as an unwelcome intrusion. Not so the Saviour! His priorities were different. His values were correct.
In these children the Saviour not only saw objects of prayer, but He saw a picture of those who would enter and enjoy the kingdom of God. It is only available to those who are like children. Such are not childish, but they are child-like as displaying those qualities of humility and trustfulness, so essential for entry into God’s kingdom.
We should follow the example of the Saviour here and pray for children. They are amongst the most vulnerable and exploited members of our society. Whether we consider the hungry and the homeless, the abused, the aborted, or the sick and suffering, we must admit that the plight of the children of our world is overwhelmingly pathetic, and utterly appalling. Present-day estimates suggest something like 100 million unwanted children roam the streets of our big cities. There are over five million children worldwide affected by AIDS.
Let us pray for children, not only because of their plight but because of their potential.The child is father of the man.
Perhaps in our private intercession today we could make special mention of the children - not just our own but all the children of the world.
